Movement & breath

synergistic support for clients and carers

Nutrition. Lifestyle. Environment. Movement. Breath. Many approaches, one goal.

Movement for Healing

There are many good reasons why movement, whether independently or assisted, is vital for improving health and maintaining a more comfortable quality of life. As a consequence of chronic illnesses, such as ALS/MND, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease, a more sedentary lifestyle may cause secondary conditions that a regular movement practice might help to alleviate.

Movement encourages better blood circulation resulting in improved oxygenation of the body and brain, which is fundamental to good health. It allows the body to expel toxins; to encourage hormones to reach organs and cells, and to improve the flow of fluid that might build up in the body’s tissues, particularly in the legs, feet and abdomen, resulting in oedema. Movement helps to improve metabolic health by regulating glucose levels, while regular movement practices let muscles better absorb glucose. As a result, conditions such as Type 2 diabetes may be reduced or avoided. Digestive issues including chronic constipation may be relieved through movement, which can also act as a source of pain relief in joints by encouraging a better flow of synovial fluid. Movement also contributes to regulating our energy levels allowing better sleep, improved mood and less tension and stress.

Breathing for Healing

Breath expert James Nestor says in his book Breath: A New Science of a Lost Art, “The missing pillar in health is breath. It all starts there.” Breathing is both an automatic function and one that we can take some conscious control over. This gives us a unique opportunity to adjust our breathing patterns so that we might breathe better, and fundamentally improve our physical and mental health.

Scientific research has been carried out to show that a healthy breath optimises oxygenation of our cells and tissues; enhances lung capacity and function; improves cardiovascular health; aids pain relief and boosts energy. From a mental and emotional perspective, the benefits of healthy breathing include a reduction in stress and anxiety, increased mental energy, and improved focus and mental capacity.

rae's approach

Rae offers a holistic approach to movement and breath that blends scientific insights with practical application.

Whether ALS/MND, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or paediatric concerns, Rae works closely with each client to tailor sessions according to their specific health conditions and needs. This could include creating a bespoke series of accessible movement exercises which can be carried out independently or with the assistance of a carer from the comfort of a chair or bed.

Breathing exercises can be designed to provide relief from symptoms such as hyperventilation, sleep disorders, stuffy nose/rhinitis, phlegm and mucus build-up, sinus issues, problematic digestion, dehydration, chronic tension and stress. Rae will enable you to put into practice the science behind nasal breathing and a strong and well-functioning diaphragm. These fundamentals of good breathing improve lung capacity and optimise the oxygenation of the body and brain. Together with Rae, you will create a toolbox of movement and/or breath techniques to help you navigate your mental well-being from day to day with greater ease.
